The main organs involved in the system are the liver, skin, kidneys, and rectum.

Liver: After traveling through the small intestine, food goes through the liver, where some of it is taken and put into the blood stream. Sugar is removed, and stored as glycogen. When sugar is needed in the blood, the liver breaks down the glycogen and releases sugar into the blood. Sugar is very important for the body because it is a source of energy for all cells, but if there is too much sugar, the liver will turn into fat and store it in other parts of the body.
The liver also removes poisonous materials from the body, such as mercury and alcohol. The liver is our main defense system from poisonous substances.

Skin: The skin is the last piece of the excretory system. The outer part of the skin is called the
epidermis. It is made of dead cells, which are constantly falling off and being replaced. The skin's main purpose to get rid of waste, mainly water and salt. Sweat glands allow for the salt and water to exit the system. They also serve to cool the body down.

Kidneys: The two kidneys are located right above the waist. The kidneys act as the body's filtration system, maintaining a balance within the body, also known as homeostasis. Kidneys remove urea from the blood, regulate water, and adjust amounts of certain substances in the blood, as well as filtering wastes and poisons. The entire blood supply passes through the kidneys once every 30 minutes. Kidneys collect the wastes and are what we call urine.

Rectum: The rectum is what deposits the food waste from the body. After traveling throught the stomach, getting digested, passing through the small and large intestines, the waste exits through the rectum. Many muscles are involved in the rectum, which aide the waste in exiting the body. The rectum is attached to thesigmoid colon on top and to theanal canals on the bottom. The rectum has things called transverse folds, which store the waste until you are ready to go the bathroom.
